Suggestions from other sources
Title | Ref | Composer | Publisher | Comments |
Act justly | Bernadette Farrell | OCP | Quite a jazz-like piece, this is one both choir and congregation will pick up and sing.
Do justly, love mercy | Theresa Brown | Devinemusic.org.uk | This simple 2-part ostinato refrain with keyboard and guitar accompaniment has verses for a cantor and a solo instrument.
Forgive our sins | Arr Paul J. Monachino | GIA | An arrangement for SAB to the tune in the hymn books. Could be one for your choir to work on. The assembly would sing the tune as usual.
Forgive us when our deeds ignore | Martin Leckebusch | Jubilate | Focusses on our need for forgiveness. Tune is ‘Tallis’s canon’.
From the many make us one | Tony Alonso | GIA | A call/response piece where the response and refrain are arranged for SAB. There are a large number of verses so this is extremely useful for the Communion procession. Instrument parts are available.
In Christ we died in Christ we live | Norman Goreham | Jubilate | A straight hymn that includes the words ‘The grain of wheat into the ground must fall alone and die, before it can attain new life’. The tune given is rather nice and it includes SATB as well as a descant, but it will fit to other CM tunes.
In every place where God is praised | Carl Daw | Hope | This straight hymn reminds us why we join together to worship and what we need to do when we go out into the world. The metre is CMD so ‘Kingsfold’ or ‘Ellacombe’ will fit.
In heavenly love abiding | Waring | PD | Modernised version from Jubilate. I prefer the tune ‘Penlan’ which you can hear in this video. This link should lead to a pdf of this tune.
Love one another | James Chepponis | GIA | A simple piece for cantor/choir and assembly. The verses could be done without the harmony. There is a descant for the refrain. Listen here.
Love one another | G | Bob Dufford | OCP | This verse/refrain song has a large number of verses so choose the ones most appropriate. The refrain is arranged for SATB. Instrument part included. |
Make us turn to you | Paul Inwood | GIA | This gentle song was originally intended for use at penitential services but will work whenever you want to focus on repentance and the mercy of God. There are various descants and the octavo gives suggestions for using them.
The Lord is my light | E | Taizé | In ‘Songs and Prayers from Taizé’. Listen here where it is sung as a round.
The Lord Is My Light | E | Christopher Walker | OCP | Based on psalm 27. The accompaniment package includes instrument parts and descant. For choral parts you will need the octavo. |
We remember | Marty Haugen | GIA | ‘We celebrate, we believe’. Scored for choir and assembly with the refrain being memorable for people to sing without words after a few repetitions. In the collection ‘With Open hands’.
What is our service to be | Scott Crandall Dolores Dufner | OCP | Contemporary setting, arranged for SAB, of Micah 6. What is our task? What is our response to God’s call?
What you hear in the dark | 1 | Dan Shutte | OCP | A simple verse/refrain song. A two-part version is available. |
